What Would Jesus Say to President Obama?

Probably the most often asked for person in the “What Would Jesus Say To…” series has been President Barack Obama. In each encounter in the Gospels, Jesus speaks to the heart of the individual and calls them to discipleship. Honor our president by praying for him unceasingly, both in his personal walk, and in his leadership of the United States.

Thank you for the teaching of the truth. I have been blessed by this message. You helped me to know how to pray for our President.

Within the last year I have heard casual remarks about The President from my friends at Dix Hills that left me shuddering.I can understand that I may differ in political views but to see Christians be so vicious is very sad.I was disappointed that the sermon left hanging certain innuendos that have no basis in fact, speculated wildly that Obama is trying to fight against colonialism and bring America down and was so lacking in positive comments. The occasional noise of agreeement from someone in the congregation on all criticisms of Obama made my blood boil. I am glad that The President identifies himself as a praying christian and I hope his faith and knowledge in Jesus Christ will grow. I also hope we can differ in our politics while always following Jesus attitudes to people.

Jane is right that regardless of our politics, as a follower of Christ we need to support our president in prayer, and honor him with our speech.

One of the things that I think Jesus would commend President Obama for, and I should have mentioned it more specifically, is that he sees the harassed and helpless. His heart goes out to the disenfranchised. This is a quality that Jesus possessed because he loved the lost. Sadly, that ability to see the oppressed is missing from many Christians. We allow greed or comfort to blind us to the needs around us.

Pray for our president, that as he sees the needs of the world, he would be able to address those needs in such a way that God is glorified.

How to Pray for the President

“Within the last year I have heard casual remarks about The President from my friends at Dix Hills that left me shuddering.I can understand that I may differ in political views but to see Christians be so vicious is very sad.”

I agree with Jane’s comments here in that, Christians should not be putting down or tearing down individuals. For we as Christians are called to love people but hate their wrongdoings. Hard to do in real life but that is what God calls us to do.

“I was disappointed that the sermon left hanging certain innuendos that have no basis in fact, speculated wildly that Obama is trying to fight against colonialism and bring America down and was so lacking in positive comments.”

I may be taking the above statement in the wrong way, but the way I read this makes our pastor sound like a liar, one who has not done his homework, and one who is not being lead by the Holy Spirit. I believe Pastor Stephen worked diligently and sought God’s help to bring to light what needed to be said to this church factually and clearly.

“I am glad that The President identifies himself as a praying christian and I hope his faith and knowledge in Jesus Christ will grow. I also hope we can differ in our politics while always following Jesus attitudes to people.”

My statement would differ from the one above. It would read something like this:

I hope that one day President Obama realizes that prayer is more than talking to himself and that when he prays to God, God will answer him. I hope that one day he would put his faith in Jesus Christ personally and grow in His love and that Obama would live his life as one who is a Christian and not one who “makes believe” he is a Christian.

Lets not mince words here. According to his statements in 2004, Obama is not a Christian. We know this because God says in Matthew chapter 7

15″Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16″You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? 17″So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. 18″A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. 19″Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20″So then, you will know them by their fruits. 21″Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22″Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23″And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’

My reference to innuendos refered to 1.disputes over Obama’s citizenship-this is only brought up by his detractors .Pastor left that topic by saying “no further comment” which might imply credibility of a lie. 2. He said the problem is not the “Great Saten America” which by being included could leave some to think this is a quote from Obama or at least his opinion. 3 The whole speculation on anticolonialism implied this is something Obama believes and is his prime motivation . There is no evidence to accuse Obama of trying to bring America down. My concern over these innuendos relates to the apparent gullibility of our church members to the voices on talk radio which are filled with very non-christian views to say the least.I am sure our Pastor’s words were well intentioned but I cannot think he was totally led by the Holy Spirit in every aspect of this particular sermon. The very passage Eli quotes is a warning to us all particularly to those who think they know Jesus and call him Lord but bear no fruit.

I just listened to this sermon because two of my childrens teenage friends walked out of the sanctuary when they heard it and I really wanted to know why. I believe the message made many presumptuous assumptions of the President. Only God knows our hearts and only he is judge. To asume that the President is carring out his ansestors agenda is absolutely unfounded. Unfortunately in this country and in our communities we view self as the ultimate motivator. Barak Obama has from the beginning strived to change the circustances of millions of americans for the better.
