As we look at Jesus’ potential conversations with today’s newsmakers, we can’t help but wonder what Jesus would say about the recent  proposal to build an Islamic mosque near the site of the twin towers.  For many, this is an emotionally charged debate in which extremists from both sides are looking to prove a point.  Jesus, however, always looked to the deeper matters of the heart and seldom talked about politics.  His words from Luke 20:19ff provide the backdrop for today.

As we read the scriptures, how often are we really asking what Jesus is trying to say to each one of us . . . and when we do, are we ready for the response?  Too often we approach the Bible with a desire to confirm our pre-existing notions and ideas.  As we listen in on what Jesus may have to say to Bernie Madoff, let us consider what lessons Jesus would have us learn from Him as well.

If Jesus was a guest this morning on Meet the Press and He were asked about Westboro Baptist, the church that is using aggressive, offensive methods to resist evil people; what would He say to them? Today we’re going to explore history of Jesus’ time to look for other resistant groups. Then we’ll look at Matthew to see what Jesus said to those honestly trying to resist evil people. Obviously the methods of Westboro are extreme and hurtful to the cause of the Gospel, but what does Jesus say to people trying to resist the evil around them? His words may surprise you.

Dawkins wrote the book, “The God Delusion,” in which he denounces religious instruction as child abuse, and proclaims Yahweh one of the worst possible gods. Our church family has been placed in South Huntington to be SALT and LIGHT to one another and to the world.
