What Would Jesus Say to Elizabeth Gilbert? (Author of Eat, Pray, Love)

Posted by Office On September - 5 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Gilbert’s bestseller “Eat, Pray, Love” has resonated with the hearts of women all over the United States who desire more from their lives than being stuck in an unsatisfying marriage.  Because Jesus values the marriage bond, He speaks to Gilbert (and to us) about properly searching for physical, spiritual and emotional satisfaction.

What Would Jesus Say About the “Ground Zero Mosque?”

Posted by Office On August - 29 - 2010 1 COMMENT

As we look at Jesus’ potential conversations with today’s newsmakers, we can’t help but wonder what Jesus would say about the recent  proposal to build an Islamic mosque near the site of the twin towers.  For many, this is an emotionally charged debate in which extremists from both sides are looking to prove a point.  Jesus, however, always looked to the deeper matters of the heart and seldom talked about politics.  His words from Luke 20:19ff provide the backdrop for today.

What Would Jesus Say to Bernie Madoff?

Posted by Office On August - 22 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

As we read the scriptures, how often are we really asking what Jesus is trying to say to each one of us . . . and when we do, are we ready for the response?  Too often we approach the Bible with a desire to confirm our pre-existing notions and ideas.  As we listen in on what Jesus may have to say to Bernie Madoff, let us consider what lessons Jesus would have us learn from Him as well.

What would Jesus say to: Richard Dawkins?

Posted by Office On August - 11 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

The second in our series of conversations is what Jesus might say to Richard Dawkins, an outspoken atheist. Dawkins wrote the book, “The God Delusion,” in which he denounces religious instruction as child abuse, and proclaims Yahweh one of the worst possible gods. Listen to what Jesus might say in order to better get to the heart matter with your own conversations of faith.

Posted by Office On June - 29 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

The 20th century brought great strides in our understanding of human reproduction and genetic research. With those advances, there has come a great responsibility for Christians to separate that which we are able to do from that which we ought to do. In this topic loaded with emotion, may we be a people prepared to give sound advice and encouragement to those struggling with these issues.

Our church family has been placed in South Huntington to be SALT and LIGHT to one another and to the world. As we spend time in worship, we should be led by the Spirit to commit to fellowship and service to this body, and the community will see and hear about Jesus. Today, we will be challenged to influence the world with John and Missy Camiola, and our own back yard as well!

Poverty and Healthcare Reform

Posted by Office On June - 15 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

The healthcare debate and the related discussions on welfare and poverty have been just as polarizing in the church as in the political sphere. As followers of Jesus, we need to embrace the priorities of Him, rather than a brand of American Christianity. Pastor Arters will be teaching on what is on God’s heart, and our individual and corporate responses according to the Scriptures.

Today’s scriptures are 2 Kings 4:1-7 and James 2:1-9.

We’re Not in Kansas Anymore: Warfare

Posted by Office On June - 1 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

In “Kansas” the dividing lines of conflict were clear-cut, black and white. Today’s military conflicts are far more complicated, even as we get “better” at the art of warfare. Today’s look into the scriptures, in 2 Samuel 19 is a reminder of the grief of warfare, and the posture we should have toward those who have served in our military.

Today we also remember those who have served our country in the military, knowing that their sacrifice has bought us continued freedom to worship the Lord.

We’re Not in Kansas Anymore: Hypocrisy

Posted by Office On May - 25 - 2010 3 COMMENTS

As Christians seek to make an impact in the world around them for Christ, some emphasize the work of the gospel to redeem individuals, while others work on the social implications of the gospel for all people. Today’s message investigates this need for balance, and the value of the believer as salt and light in the world around them.

“We’re Not in Kansas Anymore” Is there Racism on Sunday Morning?

Posted by Office On May - 20 - 2010 2 COMMENTS

Our worship today reminds us of the reconciliation we have received from the Lord to himself through the work of Jesus. In our struggle against ungodliness in the culture around us, we must remember that it is our job to be ministers of reconciliation. Receive from the Lord today, and then go forth as a giver.

This message is part 2 of the series, “We’re not in Kansas Anymore” and will look at 2 Corinthians 5:11-21.
